Eye Information & Symptoms
CATARACTS:
A cataract is a 'clouding' of the lens in your eye. If you are told you have a cataract, and it should be removed, it may be a frightening prospect. But, when you understand what a cataract is, how it will be removed, and most of all, the rewards cataract surgery can bring, you will wish you had the procedure sooner. Your vision can be clearer, brighter, and sharper than it has been for a long, long time.

FLOATERS AND FLASHES:
If you see small spots or specks moving in your field of vision or experience flashes of light, these occurrences are called floaters and flashes. Although annoying, they are generally of little importance. However, in some cases, it can indicate a more serious eye problem, such as retinal detachment. These symptoms should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist as soon as they appear.

MACULAR DEGENERATION:
Macular degeneration is the leading cause of impaired reading or detailed vision. It is caused by the breakdown of the macula, the central portion of the retina. Although macular degeneration causes distortion of central and color vision, side vision is not affected. There are treatments for some forms of macular degeneration.

GLAUCOMA:
Glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness, is estimated to affect 1 in 50 adults. Although glaucoma can occur at any age, the risk increases dramatically after the age of 35. Glaucoma is also more likely to develop in persons who are severely nearsighted, persons with a family history of glaucoma, diabetics and African-Americans. Because the beginning symptoms are so slight, the disease often goes undetected until permanent vision loss has occurred. However, with early diagnosis and treatment, visual damage can be prevented. Affiliated Eye Surgeons offers equipment that is the 'gold standard' for glaucoma management. The scanning laser photography [HRT] and the YAG Selective Laser enhance diagnosis and management of glaucoma. Click here for more information about the YAG Selective Laser.

DROOPY LIDS:
Are your eyelids heavy or tired? Is it difficult to hold your eyes open? Are your lids interfering with reading or driving? Are you tilting your head back to see clearly? This is a condition called 'ptosis' of the eye lid, which is tired, droopy lids and can be corrected with oculoplastic [lid] surgery. In some cases, visual field testing can determine if insurances will pay for the surgery.
